A Place of Dreams:
Houston, An American City
In the mid-1980’s, as the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city approached, Winningham began a systematic photographic study of the landscape, the architecture, and the social life of Houston. In a dramatic break from all his earlier work, he turned to color photography to fully describe the city that had become his home. A Place of Dreams: Houston, An American City was published in 1986, on the sesquicentennial of the city. With 165 color photographs and a comprehensive text in seven parts by Al Reinert, A Place of Dreams holds a unique place in the rich tradition of photo books about cities of the world.
Vintage color coupler prints -- color photographs made by Winningham in the darkroom in the 1980’s -- are available for purchase.
